Cutting-edge coffee house in Japan

Kengo Kuma's imaginative solution for a new Starbucks store in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan is a fusion of traditional and contemporary design to resemble the natural surroundings of the nearby Shinto shrine.

Starting from the back of the shop, small square wooden blocks were suspended and connected to form a 3D pattern that moves forward through the space like tree branches, reaching up to the wall and ceiling - to give the idea that the store is nestling a tree.

Kengo Kuma is a world-renowned, award-winning architect based in Tokyo - also designing the new V&A museum in Dundee. You can see more examples of his groundbreaking work at Kengo Kuma and Associates.
